Vision

Geography is a dynamic subject which aims to inspire in students a sense of wonder and curiosity about the world and its people. Students should be able to demonstrate relevant and comprehensive knowledge, understanding and application of geographical information and issues. Through relevant, high quality teaching and investigation, students explore the interrelationships between people, the environment and geographical phenomena. We aim to deliver engaging lessons that give students the opportunity to grow holistically as young geographers and global citizens.

Intent

We believe that students deserve a broad, progressive and ambitious Geography curriculum that is rich in skills and knowledge. Our Geography curriculum gives students the opportunity to gain the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life while providing a curriculum that is coherently planned and sequenced towards cumulatively sufficient knowledge and skills for future learning and employment and creating global citizens.

We also understand, like in any community, that students are different and we therefore take a “no one gets left behind” approach to learning. We try our best to ensure that students of all abilities and skill levels have the support they need to achieve their personal best in Geography.

We aim to develop an understanding of physical and human environments and processes, an understanding of the diverse character of places and landscapes as well as the interrelationships that take place on the Earth’s surface. We aim to provide the opportunity for students to complete programmes of fieldwork and enquiries which include the use of primary data taking place outside the classroom and school grounds.

Implementation

Key Stage3 Geography is a series of powerfuk, engaging units of work which aim to excite and encourage a passion for Geography throughout. Students learn a range of topics, from development to tectonics. We aim to provide students with a breadth of geographical knowledge whilst developing skills which can be applied throughout their school career and in their later life. Social, emotional and moral developments are also embedded throughout geography (for example, Year 8 students compare their life to similar age children in contrasting contexts). Our Key Stage 3 curriculum is a fantastic foundation on which to build on to achieve the very best outcomes at GCSE. We also work closely with the transdisciplinary team to ensure we adhere to the National Curriculum.

In Year 10 and 11 Geography provides a varied series of topics which aim to excite students throughout. Active learning, differentiation, collaboration and stretch and challenge are all embedded into each topic. Our students are passionate about the subject and develop skills which will benefit them throughout their future careers.

The Geography department regularly seeks opportunities to develop teaching practice in order to have good knowledge of the subject and courses we teach. Leaders provide effective support for those teaching outside their main areas of expertise. We aim to present subject matter clearly, promoting appropriate discussion about the subject matter being taught. Teachers and leaders use assessment well, for example to help learners embed and use knowledge fluently or to check understanding and inform teaching. Leaders understand the limitations of assessment and do not use it in a way that creates unnecessary burdens for staff or learners. Assessment is used as a learning tool to provide feedback and identify areas where support is needed.

Impact

The Geography curriculum is designed to give all students the confidence and experience to help inform and shape ideas and investigate human and physical strands of the multi-faceted subject. This will enable students to become global citizens and have the cultural literacy to be role models for the future and set a trail for others to emulate. This in turn, enables students to consider ideas such as sustainability, development and climate change in their everyday lives.

Throughout the course learners develop detailed knowledge and skills and, as a result, make good progress and to create informed and environmentally aware citizens.
